What to expect as a new teacher?
Here are some tips for how to prepare for the transition.
Don’t expect to go back to work as soon as you’re hired.
The transition to a new job typically takes about six months.
You’ll likely start teaching by the end of the first year, and the transition will be seamless, says Joanna Tulloch, the vice president of education at the American Association of School Administrators.
Tullich says there are some elements of the job that can’t be changed, such as the number of students in a classroom or the time spent in the classroom.
“Teaching is a very physical job,” she says.
Tullach says that some schools may have “no-show” periods during which students are not allowed to work, which can leave parents to try to help. “
If you’ve got kids that are not learning as well, you may have a harder time because you’re spending more time in the school building.”
Tullach says that some schools may have “no-show” periods during which students are not allowed to work, which can leave parents to try to help.
“In a lot of these schools, you are a role model to your students, and so you’ve kind of got to make sure you’re taking care of your students,” she said.
If your kids are struggling, “I think it’s not fair to say, ‘Well, we’re just going to let them go, we don’t want to see them anymore,'” Tulluch says.
Be prepared for the challenges of a new position.
The most common challenge students face in a new teaching role is boredom, she says, and it can be particularly challenging for new teachers.
“I don’t know if you’ve ever been in a school where you’ve had to be very quiet to get through the day,” she adds.
“You’re going into a school that’s full of people that are very active and doing things, and you’ve never been able to get that done.”
“The thing that you need to remember is that this is a really demanding job.
Be willing to adjust your approach. “
That’s not necessarily true. “
People come in and they think, ‘You’re just an old-fashioned teacher,'” Tillich says.
That’s not necessarily true.
“Some of these people are very young, they’re very energetic, they want to be doing something, and they have a lot going on in their lives,” Tullch says.
She says it’s important to have time to work on personal development and social skills.
“The way that you manage your emotions is really important,” she explains.
But when you’re in the office, you don’t really need that, because you’ve just got to stay on the bus and be there.”
Get some help.
If the transition is a challenge for you, you can find support through organizations like the National Association of Head Start teachers, the National Council of Teachers of English, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and other national and regional organizations.
“There are some things that we can do,” Tilloch says.
You can also ask a friend, family member, or teacher to support you during the transition process.
For example, if you work with students in the same school, you might have to adjust the schedule of the classroom so that students aren’t doing things like running around and jumping around.
Tillach says it can also be helpful to make your office a place where you can connect with other teachers and parents.
She also recommends that you talk to your parents about how the new position will affect them, and how you can best support them in their transition.
“Your parents will probably be the first ones to understand,” she warns.
“They’ve probably been there, and maybe you haven’t.”
She also advises teachers to try and stay in touch with parents about the changes they’ll face.
“For a lot, it’s going to be like you’re a kid in a toy box,” she emphasizes.
“It’s going be hard at first.
You don’t have a plan for how you’re getting on.
But you do have the opportunity to meet new people, to meet teachers, to reconnect, and to learn from each other.”
Keep a diary.
You should keep a daily log of what you’re doing, says Tull, so you can see how the work is changing and how the school is adjusting to the changes.
“A lot of teachers will write down their days,” she notes.
“One of the great things about it is, if they don’t, they can see if they’re being effective at the work that they’re doing.”
Tilluch also says you can create a daily
